Two Ferromagnetic States in Magnetoresistive Manganites - First Order Transition Driven by Orbitals

A systematic study of the electronic structure in perovskite manganites is presented. The effective Hamiltonian is derived by taking into account the degeneracy of eg orbitals and strong electron correlation in Mn ions. The spin and orbital orderings are examined as functions of carrier concentration in the mean-field approximation applied to the effective Hamiltonian. We obtain the first order...

Quenched disorder suppression of the first-order magnetic phase transition in manganites

The role of quenched disorder on the magnetic phase transition of ferromagnetic manganites is investigated through the field and pressure dependence of magnetization around TC. Our results demonstrate that moderatesmall chemical disorder promotes second-order behavior. This can be rationalized on the basis of a simple thermodynamic model in which the magnetic order parameter is coupled to the l...

Phase coexistence and resistivity near the ferromagnetic transition of manganites.

Pairing of oxygen holes into heavy bipolarons in the paramagnetic phase and their magnetic pair breaking in the ferromagnetic phase (the so-called current-carrier density collapse) has accounted for the first-order ferromagnetic-phase transition, colossal magnetoresistance, isotope effect, and pseudogap in doped manganites. Here we propose an explanation of the phase coexistence and describe th...

First-order superconducting transition near a ferromagnetic quantum critical point.

We address the issue of how triplet superconductivity emerges in an electronic system near a ferromagnetic quantum critical point (FQCP). Previous studies found that the superconducting transition is of second order, and T(c) is strongly reduced near the FQCP due to pair-breaking effects from thermal spin fluctuations. In contrast, we demonstrate that near the FQCP, the system avoids pair-break...

Spin excitations in ferromagnetic manganites

An effective one–band Hamiltonian for colossal–magnetoresistance (CMR) manganites is constructed and the spin excitations are determined. Fitting the experimental data by the derived spin–wave dispersion gives an eg–electron hopping amplitude of about 0.2 eV in agreement with LDA band calculations.
